The main drag through the village of Brimfield will close Saturday, August 1st, as the Ninth Annual Super Cruise in for Diabetes rolls into town. Muscle and antique cars/trucks, as well as tractors and various other novelties, will line Illinois Route 150 as the road will be closed to traffic from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. but open to pedestrians who can mingle with the drivers of over 200 cars in attendance “It’s pretty cool when you get cars of all ranges," said Kelli Arbogast, an organizer of the event. "It's not the same as other Cruise Ins, either.
"Most cruise in events merely have cars parked for general observance, but the Super Cruise In holds a people's choice award. Each car has a jar that people can deposit money in, and the car owner with the most money wins the best car award. All proceeds will go toward support for the American Diabetes Association.
Arbogast created the event seven years ago to raise awareness for the disease, which had affected one of her best friends, Cindy Sandall, a committee member of the event. Only 75 people showed up that first year, but its popularity has grown and serves as an apt tune-up for Old Settler's Days the following weekend." They thought we were going to have a big road party that first year," Arbogast said. "Now
hundreds show up." A bags tournament, starting at 3:00 behind the American Legion, and a silent auction will accompany the car show. There is a raffle that is featuring 55” TV and a Gas Grill.
“This is truly a community event, and a community effort” said Cindy Sandall, who is personally affected with Type-1 diabetes. “With the help of local resident, Pam Pacey and others, the ‘kids corner’, located at the village park in the heart of the cruise in, has grown into an event of its own,” said Sandall. Activities include: cake walk, duck pond, ring toss and train rides for the children. The Brimfield Area Fire Protection District will also have a Smoke House on hand to help children learn what to do in case of a fire. Sandall reiterated, “With the help of countless community members, volunteers, business, and organizations, this event has grown into a Brimfield mainstay, and we could not be more thankful!”
